The workshop was based on the idea that each student
chooses an artist from the visual arts field and engages with his/her
artwork and way of thinking to find out what is specific for their work.
The next step was to make our own work, which would carry out the defined
specific of the chosen author.
I chose the French author Sophie Calle and her work "L’Hotel”.
In this specific project of hers, she finds a job as a chambermaid in
a hotel and secretly took photos of the guest rooms; intimate compositions,
leads into the guests personal habits (sexual, personal hygiene…).
That means that she secretly observed something, which is private and
intimate, and this act put her in the role of a voyeur. The spectator
can read from her work what kind of personalities the guests had and what
they did in the hotel’s rooms, which is something that consequently
make us voyeurs.
My work in this workshop was to secretly put pictures of hotel rooms from
my journeys, bedrooms and bathrooms of my friends into her book; into
her artwork. So I used the same technique that she used in her work, like
she smuggled herself into the guests rooms, so I smuggled into her book.
My photos were adjusted to hers and the book was photocopied with small
differences, which I added by putting little marks beside my photos. I
took her book to the library, so the person who would borrow it would
think, for a while at least that my photos were her photos till the end
of the book, where I placed a description of my project.
